Strider SMF question...

I have recently been thinking about adding a Strider folder to my collection and have narrowed it down to the SMF model. I like the framelock design and the SMF looks like the toughest of the bunch. The only thing is, i cant tell whether or not the G-10 handle scale has a nested liner or is just pure G-10??? If it is only G-10, how would that affect durability?? Any input is greatly appreciated.

It's just G-10, feels a bit cheap IMO. If you want Ti on both sides get an AR or XM-18.

Impression is one thing... Question: have you ever seen a Strider folder with a broken handle scale? I haven't.

It is stronger than you'll ever need is my opinion. It is one solid g-10 slab -including the spacer unlike most other companies. I would not worry about the g-10 in any way.

My current EDC is an SNG and I think you'd really have to go out of your way to crack, break, or otherwise damage the G10 side of the handle.

Mick Strider beat an SNG on both sides with a sledge hammer, and the Ti looked worse than the G10.

There is a certain amount of state of the art in technology, where a style seems to spread through the industry. Some of it may be cosmetic, but when it's found in recognized hard use competitors, I would see it as an acknowledged improvemnt.

Framelocks with a metal side and a G-10 (or even a Zytel) side include the Hinderer XM-18, and Boker Subcom & Trance. That seems like a serious recommendation to me: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Don't know bout the Subcom, but the Trance has a nested liner in the zytel scale.. So does the new Millie from Spyderco..

From this page I understand that the XM-18 has a small liner in the G-10 scale also..

You're absolutely right about the three (Trance, XM-18, and Subcom) you mentioned. The Subcom does have a nested steel liner in the FRN scale.

The Emerson HD-7 and the CQC-12 model would have been better examples to use as a comparison to the Strider SMF/SnG, as both have plain (no liner) G-10 handle scales opposite the Ti locking side.

SMF is a frame lock. Many others mentioned here aren't as far as I know.

The only knives mentioned here that aren't frame-locks are the Spyderco Military and the Strider AR. The Subcom, Trance, CQC-12, HD-7, XM-18, and SnG are all frame-locks like the SMF.;)

I don't think its an issue, no other knife has g10 as thick as the Striders. The only reason some g10 folders need a liner is because they are thin and have a lot of flex (The Spyderco Terzuola especially comes to mind, I could almost fold that sideways!) The striders are stiff as hell, no flex possible, due to the built in backspacer. The only possble bad thing about the solid g10 is that is the REAL reason some Striders have an off center blade, the g10 got drilled crooked. But you can usually fix that by just tweaking the pivot, but it might take awhile to find the sweet spot.

the ti/G10 on striders works just fine.

i REALLY prefer the SnG to the SmF FWIW, the SnG carries as well as anything in the pocket but the SmF, though just a little bitty bit bigger doesnt carry as well in a pocket as a SnG, which really suprised me like i said not much diff there.

both are great knives though.
