Does the Strider SnG have titanium only on one side
of the handle? Is the other side of the handle only
G10 or is there some metal backing up the G10?

Thanks,
Rich

Thanks RL, but it is hard to tell from the pictures
if the G10 side has no metal backing it up. It could
have a less than full size metal liner on the G10 side.

I've looked at several other photos of the SnG here on
BF before I asked the question.

If it only has titanium on one side of the handle, is
as strong as a Sebenza that has with titanium on both
sides?

Thanks,
Rich

G10 is very strong. Mick Strider was concerned about that point when designing the knife, and did several test on the G10.

One set of test involved shooting it with different caliber guns. No real marks with anything below a 7.65 round, which had enough power to go right through.

the other test was Mick with a SledgeHammer. Hammered on the G10 side on an anvil, when it was done the knife was ok, and still worked..

There is an old thread on the other forum where Mick Strider pounded a SnG with a sledge hammer. The G-10 actually held up to the pounding a little better than the titanium.

The G-10 scale and backspacer is one piece of G-10.

I have owned both, and I think the Sebenza is one of the best folders ever made, but I personally like the SnG better. I do believe it is the stronger of the two folders. It has a thicker blade, larger pivot, and a solid backspacer that gives it a lot of rigidity. The blade hole is also easier and faster for me to open than the small thumb studs of the Sebenza. Like I said, I really liked my Sebenza, but I don't miss it with an SnG in my hand.

You read my mind!!!

Thanks guys! Sounds like the SnG is plenty tough.

I was concerned about the pivot twisting when prying with
the blade. However, since it's a folder I don't think I
would try any heavy prying. I'll leave that to my fixed
blade Strider.

Rich, I have been edc'ing my SnG since about November '02...I was lucky enough to get one (back then) with the textured G10, like an AR/GB. (The textured versions are the current crop.) I am consistently pleased with this knife. It did take some breaking in, but now it is fast and still super solid.

The G10 and wide handle greatly enhance the traction in your hand. On hard cutting, the handle stays put...it doesn't twist out as it is wider than a Sebby, for example. Also, the G10 helps with grip retention when your hands are tired, wet or slippery. Once, I was cleaning/ lubing the SnG after getting it all wet and gritty from yard work. I didnt even notice how secure the grip was until I cleaned/ lubed the other knife I was using that day. The "other" knife (my favorite beater...high compliments, indeed) was very slick and hard to hold securely. Even when the SnG was covered with WD40, miltec and this spray foam lube stuff I got for marine applications, it was business as usual. I had no idea that slipperiness was an issue, til I grabbed and cleaned the other knife. (That other knife was a control knife that day). Try that with an all "metal" knife. The mix of materials really works IMO.

The s30v is a dream to resharpen and it holds its edge well...no chipping or rolling so far.

There is less flex in the "system" than, dare I say, any other frame lock knife I have used or examined. I dont want a flame war, and I guess I may have a super good Sng or had "bad" other knives to compare, but this knife is freakin' solid and rigid...

I bought a second one in case of loss, theft or the need for a shop tune up I couldn't do. As I dont have a trust fund, I think buying a second one "in case" speaks volumes about how much this knife works for me. It is a user that sees use...how sweet is that?

My one gripe is that the lanyard hole is partially obscured by the blade tip. This requires the lanyard to be looped thru the ti. side only. Interestingly, my 1st SnG's blade is a smidge short, so there is room for the cord to completely pass through the hole. SnG #2, doesn't permit that.

to recap: a helluva capable knife.

I handled one of these at the Atlanta Blade show at the Strider table. I really liked the SNG but I was not too impressed with the stiff action. I was told that the knife in question had been opened and closed many many times. Did it just need a little lube or does the G10 cause enough friction to keep the blade from opening and closing smoothly?

Jon

I don't think it is the G10, b/c there are bronze washers and the blade doesn't touch the G10 or the ti.
I can say that the all black version (the current crop) is VERY smooth..at least based on the 3 I have handled.
