Strider SNG sharpening opinion

I got a new Strider SNG about 3 weeks ago and was having some issues with sharpening. Apparently they leave the shop at a 22 deg grind. Im using a Sharpmaker and while I was able to make most of the blade hair shaving sharp there was an area near the tip that just wouldnt sharpen. So I had a local knife shop sharpen it to set the bevel. The knife is certainly sharp now and I think I will be able to keep it so. I thought the grind they did might be a little drastic though. Here is what I got. Should I be bent?

You got an SnG, I wouldn't be too bent...maybe just a little though, if it wasnt shave sharp.

Looks like it might be able to cut something now. What was you expecting?

Now when you use your sharpmaker it will be making a micro bevel. Good stuff IMHO! You will be going all the way to the edge, and it will not take as long to touch it up.

I have an SnG and I found it a little difficult to sharpen on the Sharpmaker, virtually impossible to reprofile unless you have about 3 days to spare.

However, the Edgepro does a nice job, and relatively quickly. I would recommend you get yourself one of these, if for no other reason than you can set pretty much any angle you like.

Speaking of angles, I keep my SnG at 20 per side because I tend to use it fairly hard and I want that thicker edge.

I just thought maybe they moved the shoulder up to far. Hey its hell for sharp now. I guess thats all that matters.

what color notch or between witch colored notches is 20 degrees on the edgepro?

Green is 18, yellow is 21. I set mine just a little below the yellow. Obviously not exact but close enough. Considering that the angle of the blade and the way it sits on the rest is also going to impact the angle you can't really expect exactness. Probably what's more important, for me anyway, is that it's consistent. I've just scratched a little mark where I set mine so it's the same each time I touch it up.

Looks like they did a good job on that SNG! Pretty impressive actually. It's S30v. It can take an acute edge, I wouldn't worry about it. My sebenza is at around 30 degrees inclusive, probably close to yours. Welcome to sliceville!

Looks fine to me. The only reason you'd need a thicker edge than that is if you planned on doing twisting or otherwise movements that put lateral stress on the edge on tough materials.

I think the sharpening guys did an excellent job.

akadave2,
Hope you enjoy your SNG as much as I do mine. I always grind my knives to 20°/side. Here is a pic of my SNG and SMF. You can see the difference in blade thickness by the width of the grind...

I completely agree, looks like it will preform great.

That edge looks perfect to me. About just like mine, which incadentally was done on a Sharpmaker over about 3 days. :D

I use a Lansky diamond job. Clamp that sucker onto the blade. 25 degree each side, start with extra course, work down to fine. Good as gold. Took me no time at all. Hair popping sharp

i've used a sharpmaker on all my SnG's and SmF's with no probs, the grinds on all my striders have always been just fine too.

I have an SnG that looks like the OP's. At first, I thought WOAH... the guy took off toooo much metal! ...but holding it up to my SnG CC's profile, I see that there is no less metal from spine to edge. He just reprofiled the edge! There is NO QUESTION.. the knife WORKS better now! It'd be nice if that 22deg factory edge was under better tolerances, ane even better if they kicked it down to 20degs per side. They may TRY to achieve that, but my examples are more obtuse than that! My SnG CC is more like 22/25 or something... I got the 22deg side reprofiled in an hour or so, but I've spent like THREE hours on the other side... I've successfully reprofiled all but the tip now... but it's been a PITA!!!

One thing that's been on my mind is WHAT IF YOU HAVE TO SEND THE KNIFE BACK TO STRIDER??? if they sharpen it, are they gonna reprofile it back to 22???
