Hello, I have recently purchased a Strider SNG that I recently bought, my first one. On the blade it says Strider 055 what does that mean? It is black w/ handle w/ black tiger stripe blade.

Also, I notice the lock-bar locking mechanism is very tight! If I flick it to open or open it to hard it is basically stuck in an open position and I have to get a pair of pliers to release the lock bar. Would you recomend sending it to Strider for warranty repair? Or is this just par for the course with Strider knifes?

I'm not a knife expert but have Emerson (Commander) and Spyderco (Para) there opening and locking mechnism seems much smoother?...However, the strider does seem very tight, clip, no blde play, etc. Any advice or asistance would be appreciated. Thx!

hi michelle. welcome to bladeforums!!!

a sticky lockbar is common with frame/liner locks. a little break in time is normally all that is needed.

some recommend taking a number 2 pencil to the lockface to help facilitate the friction needed to wear down any burrs present there or on the blade tang.

the 055 is the serial number.

congrats on your new knife!!!

Thx! -- Is there somnething on utube that would show how to apply the #2 pencil? not sure what your talking about...

I have some seen a few strider vids + many other presentations on utube they are all excelent!

without taking it apart, it is probably much easier to apply to the blade tang.

just take a pencil and "color" the area where the lock interfaces with the blade.

Strider knives takes 300+ openings to be broken in. My SnG was sticky when I first got it but after many openings its like butter now.

The titanium frame lock is designed to make contact at a point (not flush) so as to allow the flushing of dirt, grease, etc. Once the contact point develops a little wear this locking of the framelock will cease.

Thats part of the fun of owning a Strider - the "break - in" period.

The other part of the fun is sticking it in things.

It will break in. Both of my Strider folders are butter smooth.

I sent my SNG in today to Strider for repair. I tried the graphite pencil, opening and closing it for the last few days. Yes, it is a bit smoother...Not still quite satisified it....I got thumb blisters on both hands to show for it. :-( Still not as smooth as my Spydie Para or Emerson right out of the package..I also notice alot of side-side to blade on my sng bought it used off Ebay. It says Strider no 55 and BOS on the back blade. I'm sure Strider can fix all of these things.

On a side note -- I would like to see better customer support at Strider the few times I called no one ever picks up the phone and e-mails are answered quite slow if it all. :-) Will let you know how good a job strider does to fix my sng. Thx!

Rest assured the issues will be corrected. My SMF was not new when I got it yet they corrected the worn detent and slight blade play with no questions asked. You will not hear from them in less there is a problem.

that's a nice score, paul bos no longer does strider heat treating, and many consider those older models to be a bit better. (though the current heat treat is said to be similar to bos' techniques)

where are you located? strider is on the west coast, and any time difference may be the issue. whenever ive called during business hours, someone has answered.

Congrats, strider has top service i know,it takes a break in time to get it smooth,i use oil heck i have all kinds, and liquid graphite also bout $4.........

Hi Michelle, Strider folders get smoother with use. Your spyderco probably opens smoother due to the stainless liners that they use. The strider folders don't have liners so its a bit scratchy opening until the g10 smooths out. As for the blade play, thats a no-no. Definitely have them fix that, it should lock up like a tank and the more you use it and the more broken in it get, I'm sure you'll get smoother action
