Is Strider a brand or just a kind of knife made by Buck? I always thought that Strider was like some real high dollar knife company but I keep seeing knives called Striders made by Buck which I always thought was an elcheapo knife company. Someone please set me straight.

I wouldn't call Buck an "el cheapo knife company".

Buck does collaborations with Strider. They mass-produce Strider designs to be sold at a lower price point in order to reach a broader customer base. Please note that these are licensed "copies", not knock-offs.

how much does a "strider" cost and do I really need one?

:footinmou :D  :p

I picked up a Strider at Blade. I got a small 4" spear point fixed blade for small-of-the-back carry. The thing is built like a tank. It's a pretty thick chunk of S30V steal. Here's my take on it:

Cons:
-A bit too thick for an S30V blade. Could capitalize on strength of S30V and made it a bit thinner.
-Very steep edge. I spent about an hour with my edgepro re-profiling it to a more shallow angle suitable for S30V.
-Tiger stripe coating is corny, but doesn't add much cost to the blade. They would have been happy to bead blast it off at no charge.

Pros
-S30V steel with good heat treat. Working the edge down was a real chore, even with an edgepro. I expect it will have great edge retention.
-Tiger strip coating for those that get a kick out of that sort of thing.
-Simple cord wrap handle make it pretty economical. I intend to put G10 or canvas scales on it.
-Kydex sheath is simple and versitile. Comes with blade lok system.

I paid $130 for it. I think I got a pretty good value, and am happy with it.

No offense, but how does this relate to the thread starter's question?

Good point, jemelby. Some "Striders" made by Strider are not priced like from "a real high dollar knife company." (Beware the TKP! :p )

Oh OK, so your point was that Strider isn't necessarily a "real high dollar knife company". :)

Sell all your Sebenzas and Microtechs and buy Striders!

Why? Are striders better than sebenzas? In what respects?

I am asking because I have used a small regular sebenza as an edc for about a year, and am looking for something a bit larger.

Thanks....

It was a joke.

If you are happy with the small Sebbie, why not try the large one.

These guys know me too well! :D LaBella brings his Chris Reeve and Microtech knives to our NJKCA meetings every month, so I had to kid him about trading them in. He won't and neither will I, but I like my Strider SnG, also.

If I had to pick one, I'd keep the Sebenzas myself.

Did you guys see that TAD was doing preorders on the new folder model that debuted at Blade? $675! Ouch.

It's so painful even to look at... it's a beautiful blade, and I'll don't have one :( At least for a while... ;)
