Striders ATS-34

I think the magic is in the grinds and the heat treat. ATS-34 is ATS-34, really. Bus with heat treating, you can optimize certain properties over other ones. The heat treat that Strider Knives have done is one Mick and Duane have come up with and Paul Bos does. Mick and/or Duane ought to be able to tell you which properties are optimized. I don't know which properties, technically speaking, are optimized. But I think toughness is one :)

Combine that with good geometry anf their use of thick steel and they end up with strong knives that still cut. Others here ought to be able to go into more detail than I. But I know it is the grinds and the heat treat that makes a Strider blade better than other ATS-34 blades.

That makes sense. So it is safe to say that a Strider is far less prone to chip than most other ATS-34? This is what I'm leary of because all ATS-34 I've used has chipped relatively easy. I really like the Strider look and feel but a little worried about the steel chipping. Will Striders be made in S30V or a carbon steel in the future? I didn't see any of this info on the web site. Many thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much about the steel chipping. I don't know if Striders will be made in s30V at all, but that sure would be interesting. They may make you a blade out of the material, after all, they are custom makers too.

as far as chipping goes, i chopped through a 1/4" steel truss rod on a guitar with my flat ground MH and all it did was roll the edge, needless to say it rolled it pretty freakin bad because i hacked at it about 20-30 times, but it was easily fixed with a sharpmaker.

I talked to Duane a while back and he said that they indeed will make certain knives out of S30V. He admitted that it is a superior steel, but the performance advantages over ATS-34 and BG-42 (w/ Paul Bos' heat treat) were less than 5%. That being said, I'm looking forward to a Strider flat ground AR in S30V!!! The ultimate!!!

I believe they already have... that is to say, the Strider/TAD Tk-b (which indeed is not available yet) lists to be made of S30V.

All of a sudden I am hearing a lot about this stuff, know little about it though. Well, if Mr. Dwyer says it is indeed superiour, I too hope we'll see more of it..

Anyone have a Chris Reeve? they use S30V

When I order my BT , TAD say Strider/TAD Tk-b S30V. will be few more months ahead.. any idea how hard it will be ? as CRK's S30V not goes to 60HC.

Payback, that is pretty good! How deep did the edge roll? Did you know you were hitting steel?

S30V looks prommising, I can't wait to here some field reports on it.

Hey,
Just a quick note. Yes we have a lot of CPMS30V right now. Yes we are making knives out of it. No, we are not yet selling them yet. This steel is great by the numbers and it is particl metallurgy. Two big plus's, but be advised, it is our feeling and I can qoute Paul Bos as well when saying, these differences are extremely small. For example, by the numbers the only real gain from CPMS30V is the Vanadium. Add 2.8% Vanadium and .2% Carbon and remove 2% Molybdenum and its BG42 without Particle Metallurgy. Will those changes have an impact? Absolutely. Will you notice them on a field use knife? Well, a whole bunch of people are going to respond to this I'm sure, but MOST people ... no.

I guess my point here is that there is no holy steel or absolute best steel and there are countless heros who have put their ass on the line out there with a knife made from materials that were never the greatest thing in the industry, and still they became heros.

Our commitment is to make a product, "with practicality of design and overkill of construction".tm
That includes working with the best PROVEN raw materials available.

So if it is your goal to have the FIRST Buzz Lightyear XM275RQ Titaniulite super knife ... you should skip Strider Knives.
We aren't done testing and evaluating yet.
But when we are ...

Until next time,
Duane Dwyer

And here I was, secretly hoping Strider would be the first to market the Buzz Lightyear XM275RQ Titaniulite Super Knife.... :D

Oh well, I guess SEAL2001 will have to do...

Christiaan.

Thanks Duane! If something is not broken don't fix it! One of my buds skined out two decent sized deer with an ATS-34 folder and didn't even come close to having to sharpen it! That's pretty good!
