Strike Anywhere Matches

I stopped using the damn things when a box of them exploded into flames in my pocket. I had to evacuate from my jeans fast, and stomp on them to put the fire out. Afterwards I had a burn on my leg and a hole in the pocket.

Since then I carry book matches and a lighter. I believe they were ignited when bumped around while working on the pick-up doing maintenance. It doesn't take that much to set them off when you least expect it.

Wow, sorry to hear that, but that's good information to know. I've been using Strike Anywheres forever and haven't had any mishaps (knock on wood).

I posted this thread because those darn matches are hard to find anymore.

Yep, they do seem to be getting rare. My favorite brand was the Ohio Blue Tip matches and I haven't seen those in a long time. :( WalMart only sells "Strike on box" matches from Forster. Maybe I'll check at ACE next time I'm there.

I do remember one incident similar to Bufford's when I was a kid and traveling with family in the truck-camper. Matches were kept in a plastic film cannister. Opening the camper, the air smelled like sulfer, and sure enough all of the match ends in the cannister had been ignited. No harm, other than all of the matches were now used up.

REI has them in both the kitchen size and the smaller box match size.
The current matches don't seem to work as well as the older ones, I think it has to to with the lack of sulfer.

The matches that I bought at Ace are Diamond Brand - the same brand I've used for years. I haven't had any trouble getting them to light. I usually strike them on a rock or a metal fire pit.

I use them a lot but notice that the striking tip deteriorates very quickly (few months) in normal climates and in hours in very humid climates. If you carry them around, have the striker available so that you can strike the normal head and start the fire should the tips become unserviceable.

You are right, that stike anywhere matches are dang near impossible to find!!!

I carry my matches in an air and water tight K&M Matchcase and haven't had any trouble, but I'll keep that in mind. At home, I keep them in a tin canister - mostly so mice can't get to them.

Thanks!

They Can Be Quite Useful In A Pinch And Don't Require A Specific Abrasive Surface To Get Them Lit And Into Action. Whenever I've Had Strike-Anywhere Matches, I've Kept Them In A Tightly-Sealed Threaded Brass Capsule.

The only brand we can find around here are Diamond, and they have much smaller striking heads than the Ohio Blue Tips. About 25% in the last 10-12 large boxes had no head or pin heads.

I was taught as a kid to carry them in a metal match container and have never had trouble. I have heard stories.
