striker for fire

I'm also in the market for one of these. I don't like the ones on Ragnar's site. The little lip it has bugs me.

check your old files, the best striker I made was from a file. Good carbon file, bench grinder is all you need. It doesn't take a whole lot of coal fire to forge one into shape either.

I found the only good use for a Buck Hartsook S30v as a Ferro rod Striker , well actually it is the Striker for my RAT fire steel

Firesteel.com sells them for 89 cents. I think that shipping is $3.50 for any order. I just ordered several firesteel blanks from them in various flavors. Anyone know if they are a good vendor?

thanks

You are talking about the flint and steel tecnique, right? if you are talking about a firesteel/ferro rod type of thing, an old hacksaw blade will do.

Not to hijack but what's a good hardness for strikers? Like a knife ~58-60 or does it need to be higher?

I got this one from Keith Johnson of Great River Forge with the piece's of Flint also, It was an added Bonus with a TomaHawk Order, It was a Great Gift ! I need to get me one of those Hudson Bay Tin's with the burning glass lens on top that would be Real Handy,

I use a P38 can opener from the surplus store with a small piece of 550 cord or a small bead chain....I can open cans and start fires with it.

I highly recommend talking with Magnussen about a Hudson Bay tin.

His kits are unbelievable.

I got the top one from Magnussen as you see it. I won it in a giveaway he had recently. The bottom one I believe is his EDC. I could be mistaken on that though.
His work is amazing. He truly puts a lot of thought into what he does.
Of course Talfucre may disagree with me on that last point.:D

Thanks Mack... I'm glad you like the kit.

The second kit you posted is my personal EDC pouch. I love the HB Tobacco Boxes!! That lens comes in handy. You can find them at most muzzleloading supply shops. I don't sell the tins separately because you can get them for the same price I do.

As for steel strikers.... I make all mine out of old files. Files work well and you don't really need to do much. Just put one in a vice with about 3 inches sticking up and whack it with a hammer. Then clean up the end and BAM! instant striker.

I have had strikers work as low as 48-50Rc.... files are in the mid to high 60's... so its all good.

Rick

Incidentally, here is a striker I just made last night.... I wanted an AGED look so it spent a little time in the vinegar/bleach bath....
