Striker for RAT FireKit

Been experimenting with different strikers for the RAT FireKit.

So far something with small serrated edges worked the best for me.
Was using the blade on my Buck Multi-tool. The problem is that it leaves deep groves in the flint, I didn't like that, but that means it would work okay with all the serrated RC knives.

I tried the small striker from the mini LMF firesteel, doesn't work too well.
The large striker from the Military LMF works good but too bulky to carry around.

I found something that works good and is small. I am using the striker from the Strike Master K1 Sparky Fire Starter from the RAT Basic Survival Kit.
I had to work on it for a while, striking quite a few times, it took some of the blue coating off, when it got to more of the steel and made it a little sharp from all the previous friction it was shooting small, multible fireballs.

I also found a good area to practice in. I use our cat's box, LOL.
I can be inside practicing this winter without the fear of burning the place down.
Normally I just do it over the sink and run water down the drain.

We made a modified cat box for Luke our cat. We took a big storage tub and use that now, he is very happy and now I am happy too. :)

I'll second the idea of trying the striker from goinggear.com. It works really good with the RAT Fire Kit.

+1 for the going gear striker. I use 5" long misch metal, and this stiker will throw a waterfall of sparks off of the misch metal rods. Going gear gave me a free one when I bought a few firesteels together.

Also a P38 an opener works well.

TTD uses a Buck Hartsook knife as a striker. Best possible use for that knife, IMHO. :)

I'd stay away from serrated strikers, which will cause excessive wear. These types of firesteels need a very sharp edge for striking whether it be the squared off spine of your knife or dedicated striker.

I agree with the excessive wear, the groves made by the serrated edges proves there is "waste". In a life or death situation if all I had was a serrated edge I would do it, otherwise I would find something else. I like to preserve all the stuff God has blessed me with as much as possible.

The awl or back of the saw on a Swiss Army knife work great. I just attached a small Vic Classic or similar small SAK to my kit. The blade works great and plus you have a couple extra tools to use.
