I'm in the market for a gas string trimmer. It'll be used on tall grass and weeds, but nothing heavier. I know almost nothing. Enlighten me, please.

It really comes down to price and features. I'm going with the larger Stihl because I want something durable that can serviced by a lot of people since I will travel with it to my Mom's house too.

Look for something that will take small blades if you are in heavy grass and tough weed stalks.

Don't even bother with a cheapie off brand. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to get one going.

I've got an Echo straight shaft. Its my second one. The first one was really hard starting and my dealer just traded me a new one for it after he couldn't get it going either. The second one has been great. I think it was around $189 something like that.

Scott,I did purchase the Tanaka 2501 along with a brushblade kit.A neighbor has one & told me, his has been trouble free for 2 summers. So I checked into this brand along with several others. easy starting, quiet running 24cc 2-stroke.It has a 5" head that utilizes 2 cutting strings vs the single string found on other models.total cost $247.Tanaka has given me a 2yr warranty on the powerplant & for defects of the trimmmer parts.Check em out at WWW.Tanaka-USA.com
Goodluck on which ever brand you buy.

Tall grass and weeds will require more hp than the average big-box models. I have a Stihl 270 that ROCKS through just about anything. I have the head that uses synthetic "blades" rather than string. They work great for heavier weeds, but don't do as well on the light grass as regular string. Much less forgiving of mistakes, too!

I also have an OLDER Craftsman Bushwhacker that will take a 12" steel blade (just like a tablesaw blade!) and makes short work of brush and briars. Need to get a new carb for it tho, dropped a tree on it last winter and shattered the carb.... oops...
