Hey folks, I recently bought a used Paramilitary 2 from a friend. I cleaned up the edge and oiled it, but under further inspection, I realized that the screws on my backspacer were stripped. I want to get this fixed. Should I send it off to Spyderco warranty? Do you think they would charge me, or say that the warranty was voided? If so, how can I get them replaced? Thanks!

Backspacer? Sounds like an aftrmarket add-on and wouldn’t be covered by warranty. Hopefully someone here can give you specs on the screws to replace them.

Why would this be a "warranty" issue? Was something defective in materials or Spydercos workmanship? Do you think the screws came from the factory like that?

SMH.

PM2s don't come with backspacers, which means that someone dis-assembled it to install that backspacer, thus voiding the warranty. Unless it's one of those Boomer52 slip on backspacers...

Sorry, I didn't mean a backspacer, I meant the small spacers in between the G10 handles. I don't exactly know what you call them. I know for a fact that it isn't defective materials on Spyderco's part. I just want to replace the screws, and I'm not sure where to go, or how to replace them.

If you email spyderco they'll send you new hardware for free or a small fee. Just specify what knife it is, and if you want stainless or black.
I think maybe barrel spacer instead of back spacer might be the terminology, but I could be wrong.
Stripped screws are really common. Lots of the time it's from low quality/ improper sized torx drivers. Spyderco even used red lock right on pm2s for a little while. So that certainly played a part in more than a few screws getting stripped.
Their customer service department is usually great, they should get you that replacement hardware with a week or 2.

Spyderco, though you should probably expect to pay for them rather than get a freebee. If you want something other than Spyderco factory screws, McMaster-Carr and USA Knife Maker also have lots of screws in stock.

Great! Thanks so much! I'll definitely try that!

those vampliers look slick.

You can get an ez out/ screw extractor small enough to work on the spacer screws too. I bought one, can't remember the brand name tho. If there is lock tight involved, a soldering iron held against the screw for 15-20 seconds should help release the bond. My experience is that you can give it a pretty good bake without damaging the g10 scale, keep an eye on it tho.

Ok, thankfully only one screw on each set of spacer screws is stripped. I'm hoping to take one side off and grip the spacer with a pair of pliers and unscrew it from the screw itself. I haven't ever taken apart a Para 2 though so I'm not sure if it will work or not. I will definitely try the solder method though if I can't get them out. Thanks for the idea! The screws that are stripped though are completely stripped. There is no possible way to get them out with a bit and a rubber band.

I'm going to call Spyderco on Monday though and ask for replacement screws. Hopefully, they won't charge but I haven't had a very good experience with Spyderco's warranty, so "knowing" them they probably will.

Why should they give them to you, exactly??

Do those suppliers sell higher quality screws or similar? Is there an advantage to buying these over spyderco? Do you know what sizes one would need for the pm2 pivot and handle screws?

Sorry, but I have no first-hand experience getting screws from either of those sources. I don't know what is considered "better" but MMC may offer something in the right size in titanium, which IIRC would generally be stronger than most steels.

Thx, I might look into that.

Yeah, that's true. Benchmade gives free deep carry pocket and the screws to go with them. I guess I just have such a good experience with other brands that I figured they might not charge. But I shouldn't expect them too.
