stripped battle grade v combat grade telling the difference in the future

So like everyone here I've been really enjoying the new offerings. Obviously the Battle Grade runs are great ways for people to get some classic knives at a great price and maybe also a way to test out some new configs for future offerings. Anyway in a couple years when the users and the strippers start floating around, will there be anyway to tell which is say an BGASH vs CGASH? Up until recently If I saw something with a talon hole and made sometime in the last decade I just assumed it was INFI. I'm not asking for anything to change, just wondering what peoples thoughts are. ?

I don't think any of the models are exactly the same as the INFI. Could be wrong though. With the BG ASH I don't think there are any saber ground ones that are 1/4" thick. The differences are subtle, but they are there. The BG team Gemini doesn't seem to be nuclear melted etc.

Jerry had mentioned the Talon Hole or Lanyard hole being a different size,, can't find the quote right now

Some days my Google-Fu is really good: ;)

We have thought this through during the 15 minutes we were sober in the past 6 months, and here are a couple of things that we came up with.

1.) We will be marking the blades with the SR-101 steel designation.

2.) We will be enlarging either the talon hole or the lanyard hole in order to be able to identify a stripped blade where the logo has been removed.

Let's Drink To The Battle Grade!

Jerry:D

Check them Talon & Lanyard holes boys! :D

Each BG has a subtle difference as far as I can tell. On the BGAD the improved feeling handle shape comes from handles that are slightly shorter with shorter tube fastener spacing and the tip of blade is up higher. Very nice indeed.

On the BGTG the stock is thicker, fuller is shorter, no nuclear meltdown (like tg14 which has no fuller but has swedge), don't know about handles.

The BGASH is mostly the stock thickness, any seller can pick up a harbor freight micrometer cheap enough to give honest full disclosure.

I have noticed so far that sr-101 stripped usually doesn't have round dimples like infi that look like skin pores/follicles, but more of a patchy raised bumps like little islands on the old sr101 or elongated pill shaped marks on the newer stuff. I'll try to post up comparison pics soon, it is easier to see than describe.

We may need a dedicated thread just for this purpose.

Thank you for this information. I will be doing some stripping here in the next couple of weeks. I am curious too what is the difference. Pics would be appreciated if possible.

Don't rock the boat, the releases in Sr101 are awsome.

I have INFI. I've owned 14 or so pieces of INFI, but the Sr101 is not getting kicked out g bed for eating crackers!

And it hurts my wallet less. Trust me, the WTF in SR101 made that one possible for me.

Awesome guys thanks! I knew there there had to be something.

Evlcat, great google fu. Surprised I missed that Jerry post. After years of hanging here I just assume at this point Jerry has thought of it and what ever "it" is will be alright. I have faith.

Tim, great info. yes maybe a tread somewhere marking the differences if it gets more more and more complicated.

Ha no worries BigFatty dude. no boat rocking. The WTF!! is a work of art. Would like to see a combat grade eventually, but there's plenty to keep me busy in the meantime.

Doing some comparisons of the TGLB to the BGTG:

TGLB Talon Holes = .21"
BGTG Talon Holes = .2375"
This is not noticeable to the naked eye.

TGLB Lanyard Hole = .2485"
BGTG Lanyard Hole = .2410"

Biggest difference I found was the fuller and spine:
TGLB Fuller = 5.288" long; .434" wide
BGTG Fuller = 4.50" long; .3075" wide

TGLB Spine = .255"
BGTG Spine = .2325"

I meant stickied Ulf or at least referenced/linked in a sticky, nicely titled threads get swallowed into the bowels of forums all the time. ;)

I don't think trying to be well informed is rocking the boat or complaining, just trying to help secondhand buyers. I don't think anyone wishes to pay for infi that turned out to be sr-101, either by accident or on purpose. It's not Jerry's problem to worry about, but the buyer's, just like the new car dealer doesn't worry too much about the used car dealer down the street where a good policy is buyer beware. If the info is out there that becomes much easier. ;)

Good specs UNRL, thanks!

It is to my eye but I see an awful lot of talon holes ;)

Interesting - Jerry specifically stated that it would be the lanyard hole that would be a size larger (as lazily quoted in my earlier post); but the info posted above seems to indicate that it's the talon hole.
The post I quoted can be viewed HERE
