After reading all the post, looking at the pics and a lot of help from tuffthumbz I worked on my IZULA today. Because I am impatient I used vinegar instead of mustard. I think i turned out pretty good for my first time. Wrapping the blade in a paper towel soaked with vinegar left a pretty interesting pattern on the blade.

How long do you leave the paper towel on? And if you put mustard on, do you coat the blade evenly?

Thanks.

Looks good! My coating is still in good shape, but I've been putting it through some good workouts lately, so when the coating begins to fade I'll most likely do the same thing to mine. Nice work!

Did the exact same thing cause I love patina on carbon steel. I looks more primitive that way. I chose to not force a patina on mine tough. It's gonna be with use that one is gonna form.

I put the Vinegar on there for one hour only. tuffthumbz Patted the mustard on with a paint brush then left it over night. His looks way better than mine you may want to contact him for the particulars on the mustard technique.

I'd like to get a nice even grey patina if I strip one some time. I need to research this patina thing.

Which ever catalyst you choose for your patina remember it needs oxygen to work. So just dunking it in a jar of mustard may not work.

Wow, that pattern is really cool. Normally I'm not a fan of a patina finish but this is really peaking my interest. Well done!

is this more rust resistant then just a stripped knife?
i am worried that if i do it it will rust under the cord on the handle
i cant wrap and oil the knife every time it gets wet(i edc my izula)

I know the blade is a little more rust resistant. As for the handle I did not strip the protective "gray" coating. I was worried about the handle myself so hopefully I mitigated that by leaving the coating on it.

well ill try on a mora that i have
and see how it holds up before ill do the izula
thanks
