I managed to stripped the screws on both my 0350 and a just arrived 0551. Is this common or is it just me?

Hi Jimmy -

These are very small screws and they don't take much torque.

I am guessing you are using too much torque on them if you stripped them out on two separate knives.

I have not had a 350 apart, but the screws on the 551 are pretty good sized in comparison to others in the ZT / Kershaw line -

You did not say if you stripped the threads or the heads - using an incorrectly fitting tool can result in stripped heads.

Hopefully it is the fasteners and not the threads in the liners so it will be easily correctable.

Hi mqqn, i stripped the screw heads and not the threads. I was using T6 which was confirmed by ZT cs to be the correct size torx key. The screws are just really tight!

1: Heat the screws slightly before unfastening for the first time to soften any thread locker.
2: Get a set of decent tools. The cheap chinese sets from Home Depot will eventually cost you more in the long run than getting some real drivers. German/Swiss/Japanese. I found that a T6 screw fit anywhere from a T6 to a T7 with my cheapy set, whereas only a T6 Wiha will fit.

Thanks for the tips DrFish! Will try that. I always thought i need better tools! But i guess i still need new screws...

Jimmy-I'm pretty sure if you give ZT a call they'll help you out with the screws.

Wiha for sure. Once I got my set, I threw almost all my other Torx drivers away - these things are absolutely awesome.

I use a quality German made flag handle Torx set. It includes. T6,T7,T8,T9,T10,T15, AND T20. There's no problem figuring out what size wrench to use. It will be a perfect fit with the correct size. The T-15 comes in handy tightening scope rings.

I went to Wiha web site and you can buy wrech sets or individual wrenches. Are the only three sizes needed the T6, T8, and T10? On my 0560 that looks like the only three, and also on my 0551?

Has anyone heard of or own the Bondhus 12632 GorillaGrip, Set of 8 Star Fold-up Keys, sizes T6-T25?
The description says that the handle is stronger then steel and it has a life-time warranty, but is it any good? Are the heads strong and sturdy?

I got one about two weeks ago and yes it seems like a quality tool. Some companies use thread compound so go easy and if tight a little heat from a solder pencil applied to the head may help.

I had a... hate to say it here, but... Microtech LCC that had the clip screws locked in with RED threadlocker. Absolutely HAD to have heat. I didn't have a soldering gun or anything, so what I ended up using was a 6- or 8-penny nail, heated over a flame until the very tip was orange. I then applied that tip to the head of the screw for a few seconds, and immediately tried to unscrew with a torx tool. Best I remember, it took three or four heatings for each screw, but it eventually got the screws hot enough that the threadlocker came loose. HTH.

Yeah, I bought a Shallot once that showed up in the mail with a stripped clip screw. ZT will take care of it for you. And maybe send you a spare clip too.

Wiha huh? I'll have to look at some of those. I have no fewer than 3 broken/twisted up T6 bits in my knife drawer right now :grumpy:

I had a similar issue with 350 today - I was changing the pocket clip to tip up and while putting the screws back, threads on one were stripped. Have written to keshaw, hopefully they send me replacement parts. Here is how the screw looks like now (the last mm or so is devoid of any threads now).

This was my first Torx tool and it served me well for a while. I eventually upgraded to the Wiha individuals and they CLEARLY fit better but the fit on the Bondhus was more than acceptable and did not strip any screw heads for me.
