Just finished stripping my SAR and found it had a competition like finish.

Gave it a quick wip blast and it looks pretty damn good.

Will finish the job tomorrow and take some photos. Has anybody else stripped a SAR to find this finish or something different?

When I stripped my CG ASH, it was all smooth, so probably something to do with the grind height.

After using the SAR again today, I think it really is and what apperas to be an underated knife!

I would not mind seeing a 7" or 8" version, same design etc, just nuked up a bit!

Would make a kick a$$ camp combo.

This is mine after stripping.

I do love this knife. One of the very best in my estimation.

Here is what I did in August 2008

Get those pics up!

It's nice photo threads like your's CMDR that explain much talked about processes in other threads. I'm curious if the scales feel looser after stripping, since it seemed as if stripper was effecting the coating under the scales? Or was that just an illusion from the picture(s) I know the coating is .000ths of an inch under the scales but the lifting effect would seem to put pressure on the hollow pins, no?

Thanks 1Tracker!

I just jumped in both feet - it was kind of unusual for me to do but I'm glad I did it.

I don't notice any difference at all with the scales at all. It cleanly took the finish off at the scales but I can't find any gaping at all. I think what you see in the pictures is a little of the loose coating that hadn't been cleaned away 100% yet. Those pics were taken just moments after rinse.

I just pulled the knife and there may be a very, very tiny gap just at the edge of the scales but it doesn't seem any deeper than the grip goes - it doesn't feel loose at all and it doesn't seem to penetrate below the micarta scales. It's more just like where the exposed coating is just gone. Thousandths of an inch at best like you said.

Good stuff gundy! I do like the tan handles as well.

I was hoping you'd get your pics up - it's like walking into a crack den and telling the addicts there'd be a batch ready soon...:D

I like it. I was really happy with how mine came out as well.

1Tracker - good talking, thanks!

Smick job Gundy

What paint stripper did you use? I’ve been looking at the ones used on the US knives and haven’t recognized any of the brands. :D

Mate, I used Protec 2pak automotive thinner on my ASH1. The paint just melted in my hands instanly. Wiped off with a rag, no soaking, just came clean off.

man I love this stripped look. Reminds me of of old world knife and sword steel. I think Busse should offer this look.
Like a pair of stoned washed jeans or something.

Hows the rust protection once they are stripped. I have a stripped FFBM, played with for a couple weeks, and now its off to Busse to be refinished. I was worried about rust, and since I take my knives out year round, snow always gets in the kydex sheaths and it had me worried.

Ian, I used Selleys 'Kwik Strip'. spray on, leave 10 or so minutes and then you do have to scrape it off with a razor blade, easy enough though. Its like bringing it to life.

Rob's product sounds interesting!

Fringe, you hit the nail on the head. It DOES have that old school look of used, abused and I really like that!

These days, I am primarily after the qualities within the steel and not so much the look!

dbltap.....I oil and maintain my stripped knives after each outing/use and while I dont do much skinning etc, all seems to be good!
