I had a bit of spare time today so I stipped the coating off the blade and made some thumb grooves. I used 400 grit sandpaper and a dremel:

It still needs a bit of polishing in the area where the coating meets the blade, its getting there though ...

Very sharp. I like the jimping on the spine. I wish I had steady hands like that.

That looks great. I, too, would love to hear about the insert.

Nice work!

For the insert I just laid the blade on top of a piece of leather and traced the insert shape, then cut it out with an Olfa cutter, making sure to cut it slightly larger than the trace, I then smoothed the edge to fit using the dremel with the drum sander attachment, I then drilled the 15 holes, wet the leather, then pushed it into place with a bit of force. This deformed the holes slightly so I re-drilled them once the leather dried a bit. I used gutted paracord, melting one end into a pointy "needle" and used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the paracord through the holes. I used a knitting needle taped to the paracord to feed it back under the wrap to keep it tight, this also creates a bit of a finger ridge that actually fits the hand well (if holding it right handed).

Wow, Rob, you got serious. Very nice work.
