Anyone ever strip a Rodent 3? Any Pictures/ Just wondering Great Blade, just wish it was a little thinner.
Thanks.

With a few mods, the R3 turned saR3 hack became a very handy little spike.

Stripped, sanded smooth and stonewashed. Filed some 'jimping' on the spine as well.

Since then I made cutouts in the tang to get some weight off, sanded again and bought ferric chloride, so one day it'll get acid bath and stonewashig... one day...

Elof,,, that looks AWESOME.

How does everyone like the performance on that little beast?

How did you do the cutouts, elof? Did you make it skeletonized, or just drill it? I'll bet it would look sexy as heck with a stonewash.

It's amazing how solid these little rodent 3's feel in-hand.

I did two cutouts with Dremel, the little cut off wheels and then abrasives of different types.
Took quite a bit of time and breathing in dust... Funny thing is that I had no issues with taking the 'power' tool to it, but I'm hesitant to dip it in ferric chloride...

No pics at the moment, when it's ready for scales I'll post a pic or two.

I can't wait to see it elof. I might trying something with mine, just don't know about getting the scales back on. What is the best way to get them off?

Should just be a matter of finding the right tube from someone like knifekits.com. I have reset some tube fasteners in a 6" vice by using the cut-off heads of a couple of wood screws to flare the tube. I'd really like to have the tube fastener flaring dies since I have an arbor press now. I think that would make life a lot easier, and an actual die should be angled appropriately. You might do a search for a thread in the embellishment/tinkering forum, I'm sure there's something there.

Since this is a spike I use & abuse and I wasn't messing with the edge I used power tools but with low speed & my bare hands to check it at all times. Although in freezing temps it doesn't warm up much with 3/16" stock at low speeds anyways. Drum sander on the dremel at really low speed for easier control with the flexible attachment and then change out to a slightly faster flapwheel for cleanup. Works like a charm. :)
