Hey guys just as the title says, wanted your opinion on this in respect to possibly screwing up the heat treat? I just came back from a cottage trip with the family and was using my new BK10 to baton some fire wood for the evening fire (smore time) and now I need to strip her as some of the coating is gone. I don't think it will harm the knife but just wanted to check with you all before I did it....just in case.
Thanks

1095 steel tempering is done at 395 degrees f. so as long as the heat gun doesn't bring it to over a 250-300f temperature, the steel should be safe.

Don't have any chemical stripper but I do have the heat gun.....I'm already in the dog house for buying the 10, don't think the wife would like me spending more money:o

I don't think I would. I don't know the temperature they get, but my heat gun gets pretty damn hot.

What about sanding it off?

I was also thinking of sanding it but to be honest.....I'd rather try something quicker.

Spray on stripper is honestly pretty cheap and it is very fast. It will last multiple knives too!

I agree with the others. I wouldnt try it. not worth it. Most of the chemical strippers are 4 to 6 bucks. if you think the boss would be mad about that, find a project around the house that could use a repaint (something for her). getthe stripper for the project. use it sparingly, and when you have finished the project, you might as well strip ur becker since you have the stuff and ur coating is coming off:D-or if you are not using it for food prep, let it come off with use-- knives aren't suppose to be pretty

Yup use the chemical, like everyone else said, its 10 to 30 minutes and DONE. Get some "Kleen Stripper" from Wal-Mart.

Heating and/or sanding.....Is not fast or simple.

I wish strippers only cost 4-6 bucks...but up here in good old Canada....things are alittle more expensive....cheapest I've found is 14.99. I guess I'll try sand paper and elbow grease! Thanks everyone:thumbup:

To be honest the amount of overtime you would have to work to make the little extra money to buy the stripper is far less than the hours you'll spend sanding off the coating ;) Just saying.

yeah what they all said. a no no considering you can spend 5 bucks on stripper and do it right without taking a chance of screwing it up.

Stripper is the best way to go. I stripped this standard #1217C/U with paint stripper ($5.95 at ACE Hardware) in less than 40 minutes.

all right all right.....off to buy some stripper....man my wife is gonna kill me....oh well I didn't look forward to the sanding anyway.:o One more thing, do I need to etch the laser engraving if I wanna put a hot vinegar patina on it?
