Hey guys, has anyone stripped off the coating of their swamp rats? If so, does the SR101 steel rust easily and how did you do it? I love the looks of the busses that are satin and have no blade coating. Thanks guys!

They are made of sr101, modified 52100 steel.
it is not stainless and should be treated like other high carbon steels.

The coating is epoxy based and will come off quick with a hardware store stripper.

post some pix when your done!

Hey steelnut, I really don't think I'll be doing it i just wondered if it was easy to do. Although I may cuz I really do love they way it looks. Hey where are you from? Just curious where my knife is coming from.

It is very easy... just put on some paint stripper from any hardware store.

As far as rust is concerned, SR101 will indeed collect surface rust if you don't oil it a bit after use. I used mine, left it in the kydex sheath for a week, removed it and found some surface rust. A 3M sanding wheel took it right off.

Here is a pic of my nekkid Chopweiler...

Wow thats smooth! How good was the steel underneath? I've encountered anything from a nice satin to a disturbing lunar surface in the many Rats I've stripped.

My Rat Mastiff has been beat hard and kept in the sheath full time and so far no issues, its getting a nice patina. I use a double cut process in the blast cabinet so I think that helps.

Lunar... it took some serious elbow grease... But it was worth it to me. I really like the satin look.
