I've noticed, in my short time in Beckerdom, that a majority strip their knives. Is there any real benefit to this or is it purely preference and for looks? It looks like a mod I could handle.

no scientific evidence or anything
but i notice that the coating creates a sorta drag when cutting something
when you strip the blade and sand it smooth the drag goes away allowing the blade to cut cleaner and easier

as i said, this is just my opinion and why i stripped my 11

Some people like it; some don't. Can't go wrong either way though. I think for my next large becker though I won't strip it. I'll let the coating come off naturally.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. At the end of the week I should have four B's, a drop in the bucket compared to some of y'all, but I figured it'd be time to strip one.

I'm all about stripping the coating off... one cut at a time. Gettin' there:

It's mostly for looks. There is theoretically less friction without the coating, but for me, it's mainly to make my knife unique to me. Also, modifying your knives is fun.

The coating is coming off with use for me. Maybe someday ill take it all off (as in the knife)

Yep these were all my suspicions. I think when I do mod the knife I'll do the Crewman as it's already wearing a lot of finish off with everyday wear n' tear.
