I'm gonna strip a few of my Beckers.

Should I strip just the blade or the entire knife?

Strip the tang also? Pros/Cons?

What's the best method? Chemical?

Best method, according to K9 is media cabinet.

You can strip the tang, you don't have to. I don't like stripping the tang cause it leaves a layer of protection under the handles.

You should strip what you feel like stripping.

I leave the zytel scales ON the knife when I strip it so the coating will remain under the handles to prevent rust when water seeps in. I use a gel called Jasco to strip the paint and it doesn't seem to affect the stock handle scales in any way.

Here is a photo of what it looks like if you strip the blade with the coating underneath. I cut myself while taking the handles off so excuse the gore. I wouldn't recommend that part of my process. :D

Lol. I'm sure that'll happen to me.

Can you get Jasco locally anywhere?

I got mine at an ACE hardware store. I think home depot and lowes has it also. Jasco is just what I used but I have seen successful results with a bunch of different paint stripping products. Somebody once said they liked the results from a spray called Citri-strip I think.

Use a utility razor blade and strip. Takes 10-15 minutes and no messy clean up.

I use a plastic putty knife so I don't scratch my blade but I'm picky like that ;)

I just realized that you meant use ONLY a razor blade a no paint stripper. Never tried that but a plastic putty knife would take a lot longer then 10-15 minutes

Alright, gonna strip the blade, but not under the grips.

What about the exposed spines in between the grips?

The pommel?

Let the finish wear off by use. What is this stripping stuff? J/k, some of the stripped ones on here look nice. I would not waste the time though.

Done! Few questions....

The stripped finish is supposed to be kinda....raw? Rough feeling? I'm sending these off to Richard for sharpening. Is it supposed to look slightly...patina'd?

You can see where I decided to leave the finish all around the handle on the BK2. I think this is a better idea. This is not a shelf queen. I think the taping off I did so that the handle retains all of it's coating is a good idea.

I'm glad I read this post before tackling anything on my BK2.

Watch me still cut myself with the putty knife...
