How can I strip the black coating off my Becker BK9's blade? If a chemical stripper will work then can you suggest a specific brand or type? Any other methods are welcome, but please only chime in with methods that you have personally used or seen done successfully. I do not want to destroy my blade with some super industrial strength chemical suggested by some jack of all trades handyman who uses it do melt steel or dissolve concrete or something like that, lol. This knife is my baby and I want it to look the same as it does now but with a stainless/satin finish. Can you help me?

If you look in the Becker subforum, you can find a ton of threads about stripping the coating.
You can also do a google search that will come up with a lot of answers.

Agreed, the Becker Subforum is great :).

Most people use a chemical stripper, because it takes like 10-20 minutes, rather than doing it by hand (which takes like 2 hours and a layer or so of skin).

To get a mirror finish on it though you'll be spending quite a bit of time on it. Underneath the coating are some fairly large grind marks, so you'll likely need to start by sanding that down with a fairly rough grit, and then working your way up to about 2000 to get that nice shine.

How do you protect the scales? I heard that blue glazer's tape works but haven't tried it.

Maybe fingernail polish remover? I dunno...anytime around the house that there are spills paint wise, I pull out my wifes nail polish remover and that works great.

I have used a combination of both Dremel tool with green compound and a series if sandpaper grit starting with 300 and ending with 2000. Lots of time required though.

I just purchased some high powered paint stripper from Advance Auto. Works in about 1/2 an hour. Did just the blade on one or two of the bigger knives and stripped all of the BK 11 and 14.

Quick, easy and I still have enough left over from the original quart to do another 1/2 a dozen more.

Edited: This what I used.
