I just got this rat model-1 in the mail today after getting home from work and was fairly happy with the ergonomics and how solid it feels.

But that ugly black blade coating just had to go, I'd never stripped a blade coating before so I turned to my favorite resource for information (bladeforums) and found out pretty much everything I needed (orange goop)

I put in a little bit of elbow grease after letting it sit in the goop for about 45 minutes. It was rather easier to get the paint off than I expected. I made a good bit of mess from the paint flaking off but had easy cleanup with newspaper underneath.

I polished the blade and clip up with some sandpaper that was laying around; I think I went 400, 600, 1000, 1200, 10 micron, and then 8 micron simply because that's what I had on hand, it really wasn't necessary but I think I got it a bit shinier than when I started off, oiled up the blade and liners and put it all back together. I'm quite happy with the results and had a good time doing it.

Why didn't you just order the plain stainless model ?? lol.

It's a lot more popular than the black blade and was out of stock everywhere I looked. It also gave me something interesting to do and I figured it might encourage some people to not worry so much about the ugly black coating if I showed how simple it was for me to remove.

My knife care and modification expertise doesn't go very far beyond unscrewing for cleaning and putting the pieces back together. I figure if someone like me can manage it, anyone should be able to and was hoping to be able to contribute back to the forums in some way despite my extreme lack of expertise in comparison with most posters.
