Stripping the black coating ONLY on the blade?

Hey fellas - I've got an RC3 inbound and want to take the black coating off. I don't want to mess with taking the handles off and I want the black coating on the handle section of the knife.

How do I strip the coating but stop just prior to the handles?

Hang it in a cup of stripper?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I am thinking about stripping my RC-6 too. Maybe cover the micarta slabs with tape and apply the stripper with a brush. Or draw a line along where the blade meets the slabs, then take the slabs off and strip to the marked line. Another idea would be to strip the whole steel and then apply some penetrol onto the tang as a rust stopper before putting the slabs back on.

I stripped my cold steel norse hawk. The handle had been stained and clear coated. I just put tape around the handle and it was flawless. I'd suspect you could just tape the handles, then cut the tape away along the tang. The micarta shouldn't be nearly as sensitive as the handles.

Might I ask why?

Once you use it a bit, it smooths out and you really cannot even tell it is there.

If you wanted to strip it, the handles are really, really easy to take on and off.

I really love the design of all the Rat knives but like the look of an un-coated blade. I saw a picture of one person that stripped all but the handle portion and it looked pretty sweet. I can't find that post again though.

Fair enough. ;)

I generally am not a fan of coatings either, but 1095 stains so easily, I really like the powdercoat. It is very durable as well.

I havent stripped one though. Someone will chime in.

Hey, there's always sandpaper!

You used sandpaper? Could you ellaborate on your method a bit? Grits, time, etc.
Wet/dry 200 grit for epoxy removal, 400 for clean up and 600 grit for semi polishing.
Another option is to just use 400 grit to remove the texture but leave a smooth epoxy finish.

That's it, Doc. That's exactly what I'm looking to do. You used sandpaper? Could you ellaborate on your method a bit? Grits, time, etc.

Thanks a lot, man.

Sure - get sandpaper, rub. :D

Jk, myright. I don't what kind of sandpaper I used - whatever was lying around here. As far as time, it took awhile - I'm sorry but I can't be any more accurate than that -time/distance deficient.

It's not the nicest looking finish but I don't really care. I didn't remove the scales because I wanted protection where I couldn't see, and I left the little bit beside the choil, where 'ROWEN' is. I find that it cuts better with the coating removed and I don't worry about rust - when I use my knives, I wipe them.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but there's not much to it - get sandpaper, rub. :D

That 's DOC fer ya ....
I'll help a little :p looks like DOC went spine to edge in an up & down fashion..... circlular motion is fine as well....
Me personally I'd use a stripper (insert joke here  ) and wipe off coating and touch up with sand paper 400-600 grit :D

LMAO - Nice

I'm not to concerned about how it looks in the end either. It's a user and is going to get beat up anyway. I'll start with sandpaper and see what kind of progress I can make with it.

Thanks Doc!
