Stripping the Coating

I love my Recon 1 but would rather not have the blackened blade. How would I go about stripping off the coating?

It's very simple buy some jasco premium paint and epoxy remover. Spray it on the blade and wait 15 minutes and then scrap it off with a plastic spoon.

I took off the teflon coating on my old recon 1 long time ago, just scratching it with the bottle opener from my sak. Worked just great.

Thanks guys.
One more thing -- should i disassemble the knife and remove the blade, prior to the removal process?

Your call. That is if you do it with scratching, otherwise, if using acetone and the like, i would say disassemble would be necessary.
With my scratching method, at first i did it without taking the knife apart, but after, wasn't satisfied so i took the blade out and finished the job.

definitely disassemble your knife if you are using paint stripper. you can strip the lockbar as well. one more tip, don't get the the "gel" type stripper, i.e. the viscous one that sticks to the wall, buy the more watery one...

I've stripped the coating on my CS knives using 3 different methods. Steel wool, chemical stripper, and just scrapping it off with another hard object (in my case another knife blade). All three got the job done, but I strongly prefer the steel wool method personally. The stripper is fine, but it is messy and has some cost associated with it (ie, you have to buy the stripper and best to buy some chemical resistant gloves to be safe). Scraping it off with another hard object (like a knife or bottle opener) works too... but I liked the aesthetic results I got with the steel wool better (ie, it left the stonewashed blade underneath with a cleaner, softer sheen).

The steel wool method does take a little more time though... but worth it in my book. YMMV.

Oh yeah... and definitely take the knife apart... and don't worry about leaving any coating around the pivot area... removing it doesn't adversely affect the pivot in any way. Also, I did the lockbar and pocket clip too with steel wool... in the case of the pocket clip the steel wool method will leave the coating in the "Cold Steel" logo on the clip... which is a nice look IMO.

Jon, specifically what kind of steel wool?
Also, by removing the coating from the blade, will the logo be gone too?

Just your garden variety el-cheapo steel wool (think my wife bought it at the dollar store). And no, the steel wool does not affect and/or remove the logos at all. All is well. :)
