Stromeng Leuku

Nice - no I don't have one. I'm partial to the old fashion one being offered below the shiny one.

Koyote also makes traditional Leukus. I've just put an order for one like this one from him :)

I've seen that picture too, and I have 2 of his knives, but this one calls to me for some odd reason.

i don't know if it was a stromeng or not, but i handled one very similar to that. the handle was a little short and a little bit bigger around than i like for a chopper blade, but certainly something i could get used to.

leuku blades also draw me, just something about them.

Yeah well YOU are the reason I went looking. I was on Ragnar's site looking at the wood jewel knife you told me about and found the wood jewel leuku, then this one.

ive got one. definatly one of my favorite knives. i got mine really cheap at a gunshow, but i think they usually retail for 90ish, but that is still definatly worth it.

Hey Barber, how thick is it? I will baton and chop with it and want to make sure it can take the punishment, especially in Minnesota winters.

Seeing as how that's what they were made for I'd figure it would. I'm looking at the Roselli myself. :D

well, actually i am several hundred miles away from my stromeng currently :( , but, it is about 5/32 maybe. ill see if i can find a pic of the spine.

heres the best pic i could find that kinof showed the spine:

my only gripe with it is the handle coating. its removable, but i think that if i removed it, that would make it loose in the sheath.

its just a tad over 1/8. the handle is varnished, kindof like those cheap harware store axes. briangandrews does a neat treatment to his S&N handles, so you might be able to copy his technique. its not a huge problem though.

I see. I often paint my wooden user handles with clear nail polish, it gives a bit of a tacky feel for grip and waterproofs them pretty well.

My grandmother gave me one made by Helle when I was a kid.

Blade is 8.5" with a Scandi grind and is sharp as Helle. The handle seems a little short to me and it came with a traditional full-pouch sheath that was not easy to use. For what ever reason, I don't use this knife much. To bad, 'cuz it is a nice knife.

Looking at Christof's version, I greatly prefer his. I like the handle better and the blade shape seems a tad more functional.

OK, I've just about talked myself into ordering one from Koyote now. ;)

Wow yours is awesome! Very much like the one in my link. Why do you like Koyote's so much? Dang, you might get me to order on from him too. The 2 knives I have of his are excellent.

Man, ...that Koyote Knife calls to me.

Is there anyway we can get a group discount? :D

Looking at the Koyote, it seems to me that it has a slight taper, creating a longer belly. The Helle has a slight clip, but the Koyote appears to have a more gradual drop to it and overall seems a bit 'pointier.' The Koyote looks a little longer of blade; I picture it being more useful for making snow blocks, cutting pine boughs, etc.... But the biggest difference for me is the handle. The Helle has a traditional handle--I generally respect tradition--but I like the look of the Koyote handle more. The Koyote looks like it could accommodate more grips while still being quite secure. The little swell in the butt of the Helle limits the number of useful grips. It's odd, but I often focus on handles more than blades. A handle can make or break a knife for me.

Guess I need to get one and do a winter trials comparison.

The youtube video I watched had this guy using the flaired end to hold as he chopped. Definitely a less tiring motion than using your whole hand, but less power too.

Yeah, I think that would work. The swell kind of hooks into your fingers. But I still like the Koyote. :D
