Strong detent on Mnandi

The pressure of the detent ball on my Mnandi is really strong, to the extent that I cannot open it with one hand easily. I need to grab the nail nick from both sides with my thumb and middle finger to generate enough force. It is a damascus blade, but the area around the pivot is smooth.

Any help?

That is extremely unusual in my experience. I have owned several Mnandi (and currently own two) and all have opened with little to no effort.

What is the birthdate of your Mnandi? There have been several changes to the knife as of late and a strengthening of the detent may be an additional change that I'm unaware of.

October 20, 2010. It's the older model, without the new pivot head and clip. Lock-up seems to be at 50-75% so I don't think it's due to the bar applying too much pressure.

The Mnandis I have are all very easy to open but the detent is strong enough to keep the blade in the handle. I'm not sure I see the detent being the problem here though, the strength of the detent is actually largly governed by the strength of the lock bar spring. The Mnandi uses quite thin Ti for the lock and the spring just can't need the sort of force you describe to be overcome. I suppose the only thing to try would be manipulating the knife in a different way and see if you have any luck. The out to the side and round opening techinque is what I seem to use, the push straight up method doesn't work. I know this is going to go down well but you can use the "spyder-drop" to open a Mnandi too. :)

Wow the "spyder-drop" actually worked, wasn't expecting it to. Thanks for the advice. I guess I do have to work on my technique, but the little thing isn't easy to manipulate with one hand.

They are a small knife, no two ways about it, but even I can work one with my mashed up hands so I'm sure most people can get it figured out. :p:thumbup:

same thing happened with my sebenza when i first got it. i couldnt even open it one-handed because the lockbar was pushing so hard against the blade and causing the detent to have too much pressure. obviously, nobody would "recommend" this, but i pushed the lockbar out in the opposite direction until it solved the problem. works perfectly now.
