Just got my zt0640 and the detent is so strong that I cant open it with one hand, well I can, but its really hard, my thumb hurts af hard. Tried to loosen the pivot but it didnt work. Will it break in or should I send it back?

I don't have a ZT 0640 but I've got two ZT0620s and one ZT 0630 and they ALL have stiff detents.

This isn't a big a deal w/the 0620/0630 because they are primarily designed to be opened using the wave tab when drawn from the pocket but it would really irritate me if the ONLY way that I could open these knives were using the thumbstud. In fact, when I want/need to open these knives manually, I don't bother using the thumbstud but instead use the tip of the wave tab, which provides a better angle/point of contact with which to open the blade w/my thumb.

So, if I had a ZT 0640 with a similarly stiff detent and NO other way to open it except using the thumbstud, I'd just send it back.

BTW, I've got 31 ZTs and the reason that I never bought an 0640 is precisely because it doesn't have a wavetab. No reason whatsoever to buy an Emerson designed knife w/o a wavetab IMO.

For a $250 dollar knife I would send it back, not all wave openers are not that stiff, I can even flick my Emerson CQC 7

The two I have both have strong detents, which I like and prefer. The bigger issue w/ the knife is the stock thumb disc..too small.

Highly recommend an oversized/monster disc. Works like a charm. I slow roll to open mine, for the most part..but can easily thumb/middle finger flip, no problem.

Of the one I carry, the detent seems to be getting smoother rather than easier. As it wears on the transition as well as the overall breaking in of the pivot/washers.. probably adds to the perception..

Great knife..get a bigger disc to start, for sure..there are a few makers out there..These are from Pete at Gray Precision .

I don't own one of these, but I do own knives that I struggled to open easily until I found the right angle of attack or finger position. Once that clicked, it got easier every time.

For example, the BM 940's close-set thumb studs took me some time to get used to (it wasn't until I tried marble-flicking the stud with my thumbnail that I got it), as did the strong detent on my Socom Elite. Opening them is second nature now.

Is it possible that experimenting along these lines might do the trick?

I found the perfect angle, still hard, even the lockup is 50%. The locbar just blasts out when I open the knife.
