Forgive me if there's already a thread on this, my search-fu is weak. I just bought a strop kit with compound. My question is after applying the compound how long does it last before it needs to be re-applied? Can you tell by the colored compound fading or by feel? Does the compound deteriorate without use? Also, the kit I bought was from Knivesshipfree.com and it is the KSF complete kit with Otterbox, anyone have any experience with it? Thanks.

I add more compound after stropping about 30-40 knives. The compound will turn quite black after just a couple of knives but that doesn't mean it isn't working. It means it's working very well!

When adding more, if using a bar-type compound, just two-three 'crayon' strokes down the strop is enough. You don't need to slather it on like mustard. The stropping action itself will spread the compound very nicely.

I remove and replace mine when it gets glossy or glazed looking... I figure it's loaded up with metal by then.

My chromium oxide stopping compound is from HandAmerican. It's a detergent-based paste; wiping down my strop with a damp/wet paper towel removes it.

Stay sharp,
