Question. As of now i've only used toothpaste or a mixture of baking powder and water on my strop. Yes it's worked greatly but I have had to apply it each time. When I eventually get real strop compound, will I have to apply more each time or will it be lasting for days or whatever.

Toothpaste & baking soda do little more on their own than a bare strop of leather or fabric or wood could do. Neither is hard enough for any real abrasion or polishing on hardened steel; if they were, they'd be very hard on your teeth, stripping the enamel in short order. In fact, baking soda is much less hard, and likely does nothing at all on hardened steel.

A decent compound made for polishing steel will last quite a while on a strop; at least a few weeks, and perhaps longer. Some very aggressive compounds will load up a strop very quickly with swarf, which can clog it and render it less effective. Such strops need to be cleaned more often, which also removes some compound with the swarf; so, the compound would need reapplication occasionally as well.

Okay thank you. For the life of me I couldn't find estimated time. All I could find was how to reapply nothing about how long it normally lasts.
