For the longest time I've just sharpened up to 1200grit then stropped on a leather belt - It puts a mean hair popping edge on my knives, but I've been meaning to take it a step further.... Right now I'm looking at 6oz of green honing compound (chromium oxide I believe?) + this two sided leather strop for $33.97shipped... is this a good combo for the price? If not, what would you guys recommend? I'm trying to keep it cheap FYI

Look like the set up I got from Lee Valey tools, and it works great for me. I have actually been able to get to hair whitling sharp with my set up.
Is it the best out there? I dout it but it works all the same.

Yeah that's actually the first place I looked, but the strop+compound combo was $33.50 before shipping. I'd imagine it would be $40ish+ after :o

Maybe I'll just purchase some compound and take a stab at making my own strop... does anyone know where I could buy some decent leather locally? Perhaps a crafts store? What qualities should I look for in the leather to assess whether it would make for a good strop?

I got the same setup from Lee Valley Tools... works great. That's not a bad price, exclusive of shipping.

Yes, you can easily make a strop, using 10 oz. leather form a saddle shop or shoe repair shop . Just glue it to a board and rub some of the green compound on it and start stropping . DM
