I've actually done this, with the leather slipcase for my Spyderco DoubleStuff hone. I used the edge of the slipcase for this, as it makes it easier to hold in-hand and strop that way. I originally did it with some red rouge compound, in my early days learning about sharpening. I'd probably use a different compound these days, but the method itself is tried & true, at least in my own experience with it.
I have occasionally stropped on the hard/smooth face of the same slipcase as well. Didn't apply any compound to that - but bare-leather stropping is worth a lot in itself. And leaving the stone/hone in the case makes for a more stable backing.
