Strop or Strop Block

I recently came across a scotch lassie 144 leather strop. It has been used, but is in good shape.

My question is should I leave it as is or cut it and build a stropping block?

It will be used on small to large fixed blades and maybe a hawk when I get one.

Thank you.

If you want beveled edges, mount it on a block.
If you want convex edges, leave it as a hanging strop.
Much easier this way. You can get either type of edge with either style, but this just makes the work easier.

I'd just suggest going ahead and making a strop block, but use some other leather (veg-tanned). They can be made very, very cheaply, from simple materials. A lot can be learned by using both types (block vs. hanging strop), and if you cannibalize the hanging strop now, you might wish you hadn't later.

Edited to add:
You could still use this hanging strop on the 'bench', if you like, without having to cut it up and/or gluing it to a block. Secure it to the edge of the bench, or to a block, using temporary clamps or whatever. That way, you can try the strop in both ways, hanging and hard-backed, and not worry about sacrificing anything.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will leave the hanging strop and make a separate block.

Wise move. Those old strops are nice to have and making a strop block is so easy. Try some balsa wood too...bare balsa. I've been using it since mid summer and I really like it a lot.
