Strop Question

I picked up a leather strop from knivesplus.com. It is one of those that's attached to a wood block and has the green compound already in the leather. I have used it a few times and it seems like the leather is starting to get real smooth down the center. I am using it properly, I think, and I am being very careful with it.

It works extremely well, I get a scary sharp shaving edge everytime with just a few swipes, but I thought it would last longer?

Is there anything I can do to make it last?

Do I need to add more compound?

And should I get a different one?

Thanks!

Send an email to the KPlus folks. They are very helpful. And... be sure and let us know what they tell you.

Well I called and talked to the fella that makes them. He said he thinks what I am seeing is normal. I won't worry with it until it quits working!

The abrasive compound gets pushed down into the leather pores with use. It still hones, just less effectively.

Apply a fresh coating of the green compound. If you use green crayon, just apply it in an 'S' pattern along the length of the strop and disperse it as evenly as possible over the surface by circular or zig-zag finger strokes. If you use powder, sprinkle the powder very lightly and disperse with your finger.

Should be good as new.

Hope this helps!

My strop reached the same state a year or so ago. I've done nothing and it still works perfectly. I have read that you can use a waterless soap (the kind that you would fine in a mechanic's workshop, not the alcohol disinfectant gels) to clean up the strop. You then recharge it with Green CrO.

As long as mine still continues to give that final snap to my edge....I'm not doing anything.
