I'm trying to make my first strop. I got a strip of 2"x50" 10oz leather, but now I realize I don't know which side to use. So can anyone tell me which side faces up when I glue it, the rough side or the smooth side?

You may want to also compress it if it is not pre compressed. I think it is a matter of wetting it, letting it soak in and then compressing the leather via clamping or rolling. It may be a good idea, my first attempt has some ragged patches where the compound does not stick. The beauty is watching your knowledge and experience grow together while sharing what you learned. MTE forum is very syngertic. There is a lot of great people here willing to help....Knifenut knows, he taught me a thing or two.....

Hey thanks, you two. The leather's being clamped right now, so how long should I leave it like that?

Smooth side up for bevels, rough side up for convex edges. What kind of edge are you planing to strop? I don't know if they still sell them, but HandAmerican used to sell a very high quality roughout leather strop mounted on a corian base. Wonderful for convex edges!
