Strop Questions

So I've been using my Butz strop for about 6 months now, and I typically use it for about 10 to 20 minutes every day. I find that the strop looks pretty dirty and gummy after about 10 to 14 days of use so I've been cleaning it by spraying WD40 on it and wiping it off until I can swipe my rag across the surface of the strop and little to no compound comes off on the rag. My questions are: 1) Am I using the proper technique to clean my strop or is there a better way to clean a long fiber leather strop? 2) Am I cleaning the strop too frequently or perhaps I'm not cleaning often enough?
