Strop storage?

I just bought a double sided strop a couple weeks ago and it's just been sitting on my desk out in the open because I'm not sure how to store it without having the compounds cross contaminate. Any advice?

Large clean plastic bag. Zip-loc, if possible. Could also wrap the strop in a clean towel; the downside there is constant transfer of the coarser stropping compound to the towel, which will eventually cross-contaminate the finer strop. It'll be difficult to prevent cross-contamination entirely, no matter how you wrap or store it. Can minimize it by wiping down each side of the strop with a clean paper towel after each use, to collect/remove any looser compound grit that would otherwise easily come off.

I use the long plastic bags the newspaper comes wrapped in on rainy days.

I had set aside a handful of those months ago, not even knowing what they'd eventually be used for. That seems a perfect application for a long(ish) paddle strop.

What happens if you just leave it out in the open? That's how I've left mine.

It gets a bit dusty. Just wipe it with a clean paper towel or clean rag before using it. I also tend to leave mine out and 'exposed' as well. Unless one is really, really picky about perfect mirrored bevels, I wouldn't worry about it. :D

Good to know. Thanks! Think I'll continue leaving mine out.

My hanging strops just get left hanging. My bench strop gets used for 10-15 strokes at least every other day, so not put away. All my older strops from HandAmerican are in 5¢ plastic document folders that I cut to size; each in its own folder, and put in the closet.

I keep mine back to back, so it's like a double sided I guess. Anyway, I keep them wrapped in a paper towel which gets replaced after use. I always have the paper towels out when I'm sharpening anyway so it's not a hassle.

I was concerned about storage because I'll be taking my strop back and forth between my home and my dorm room. Thanks for all the replies.

I grabbed some scrap vinyl roller shades from home depot. They cut them to size for you and i asked to keep the 8 inch piece. I made a case for my strops out of it and some duct tape. The vinyl doesn't hold onto the compound as well as other material. And you can orientate it so you are always putting the strop in with the compound facing the same direction.
