Stropping compound

I use bark river black and green compound on mine and they work wonders. I am looking for something a bit finer than green though so I'll pay attention to this thread. You can get the bark river compounds from knives ship free.

I use the green compound, and white jewelers rouge. I recall someone mentioning that diamond paste works very well too. Been meaning to give it a try.

Is the white coarser or finer than green?

The white is likely aluminum oxide. It's particle size is usually in the 3 - 10 micron range, give or take. The green compound (chromium oxide) is generally about 0.5 micron. Due to it's very small particle size, and that it's not quite as hard as aluminum oxide (white) or silicon carbide (black/grey), it's most effective only after sufficient preparation has been done. In other words, it's best used at the end of a polishing sequence, such as black --> white --> green. If the edge is very coarse, the green by itself may not produce much noticeable improvement.

Diamond pastes/sprays are available in 6/3/1/sub-micron sizes (down to at least 0.25 microns, maybe smaller).

i've also seen diamond compounds coarser than 6micron. they are not made for sharpening though, at least not knives. but this could be usefull to some.

This is going to sound very redneck, but here it is:

I have a couple of decent-quality water stones. When I use them, I save the slurry and wipe it on the leather belt I use as a strop. And it does an amazing job.

done that on balsa too. it works, usually the slurry polishes a hair better than the stone itself but not much and it's a very good way to deburr an edge without changing too much how it will behave, for exemple if you decided to stop at 5k, stropping on 1mic diamond to clean the edge will also refine it a bit, even if you don't want to.
