Hello, I'm pretty new here and just love the forum. I've learned a tremendous amount about knives/steel since reading this forum. I was hoping someone might be able to post either pictures or even upload a youtube video on proper stropping technique. I've also heard it mentioned a few times that some finish their edges by stropping on a glossy magazine cover. How is this done? Even if you can't post any pictures or anything any general stropping tips/instructions would be really welcome. Thanks!

Skip the magazines/jeans/boots/belt nonsense. A real leather strop doesn't cost that much, and will do an infinitely better job.

That's a guy stropping a straight razor and talking about it a little bit. One of the users on here also has a series of videos of both honing and stropping with diamond paste to a hair-whittling edge (I don't have it saved but I'm sure someone will be along to link it).

Stropping is incredibly simple. Take a piece of leather glued to something hard like a block of wood, rub some polishing compound on it to an even finish, then use edge trailing strokes with very light pressure at the same angle the edge bevel is sharpened at, maybe a degree or two less to avoid rolling the edge. Just try it and you'll have it down after a minute or two. It's one of the easiest things you can possibly do to keep a knife sharp. Even if your technique is sloppy your edge should come away sharper than it was.

You can get results out of jeans, belts, magazines etc, but they're not worth the time. Leather and compound do it better and do it faster. If you want stropping on the go, get a piece of newspaper, fold it up, put some compound on it and stick it in your wallet.
