regular paper is used in catra tests, and regular white 20lb computer paper can signifigantly dull knives if you cut to much, could you use it to strop on to get a finer edge? what grit is 20lb white paper?

You can strop on anything. Some things work better than others. If your paper is 'coated stock' it will work better than uncoated, as the glaze that is used is made from clay. This is why magazine covers work so well. I haven't seen anything that tells of grit sizes for paper or card stock, but purely from anecdotal evidence I'd guess it to be about 3 microns or less. The difficulty in figuring size arises from the fact that the soft nature of the clay makes for rather slow polishing.

Thick/heavy comp paper (especially card stock) is also a decent vehicle for holding various compounds... decent, not great. Before I discovered leather, MDF, balsa, hard felt, etc. I successfully loaded paper with the waxy chromium oxide and very lightly misted diamond spray... a touch too much and paper deforms from the water in the spray.

Apply an ultra light coat of flitz or auto gylm or what ever polishing pastes you can find and you will have a great strop. A few minutes per side and you will have a hair whittling edge.

I was told as a kid that paper severely dulls all knives, because it's super abrasive being made from wood.

Turns out that anything will dull a 420JS blade "quickly."

I haven't tried stropping on it though. Would additions of compounds / sprays weaken the paper making it unusable?
