Would a mildly abrasive buffing compound such as turtle wax work to charge a leather strop?

No - if you want the stropping to have any noticeable effect (other than some alignment of the edge) then any compound used should contain ingredients that are harder than steel. I use Veritas Chromium Oxide Honing Compound on a wood-backed leather strop from Lee Valley Tools. Light stropping with the honing compound will remove the burr, heavier stropping can give you a polished edge (if that's what you desire).

thanks. What grit wet/dry paper usually provides the best edge on a knife that is pretty dull? It has a convex grind. Thanks for the help

Thom,

I was trying to get the US sites because I may be visiting New York in Oct and wanted to see the closest retail store. I can't seem to get the US site at all. Each time I click on retail stores I get a map of Canada. The US prices are much cheaper, e.g. the Norton 8000 waterstone is priced at US$74 and at Canadian$94.00 when it should be about 82.00. I can't get the US sites from your url.

The Boron Carbide cuts much faster than the LeeValley Veritas green stropping compound. I like it and am thinking of buying some more (different grits) from Hand American. I bought quite a few pieces of leather and am trying to make more strops - big ones like 4X15 but just lack of time since I still need to work for a living. If I happen to be in New York, I may visit Tools for Wood working and buy their horse butt strop, besides other nice things for sharpening that they have. I know they also have Norton stones. I have a lot of convex knives, 10 Bark Rivers and 4 Swamp rats + 1 Busse, so I'll be probably needing a lot of strops.
