Hi everyone, I have a 1" wide stip of leather about 10" long that I'm thinking of using as a strop to sharpen my Khuks. First question, do you think that piece of leather will work and second, what kind of buffing compound (brand and other info) should I use and where would I get it? Thanks in advance,

Heber Ellsworth

Heber the 1st thing you will need to do is glue the leather onto a small board the same width as the leather wwith the smooth side
up.
The width is fine, the length a little on the short side, about the minimum length I would use.
Use a good quality of wood glue, I use the yellow Carpenter's Glue.
There are several places online to get your choice of buffing or polishing compounds. Texas Knife Makers Supply is the 1st one that comes to mind......
If I only had one strop I would use jewelers rouge on it, good compromise.
If you want a higher polished edge go with the Chromium Oxide.

You could also go to the Shop Talk Forum and do a search on buffing and/or polishing compounds as well. Lots of information there!!!!:)

Thanks for the info Yvsa! What's the URL for Texas Knife Makers Supply? Correct me if I'm wrong, you can sharpen and pollish a blade just by stopping it right?

Thanks again for the help,

Heber Ellsworth

I used to strop my knives, but geez thats alota work on a knife your gonna use a whole lot. There some reasonable hones out there thatll get your khuks hair poppin sharp in a matter of a few minutes. I used my little ang khola over the weekend to destroy a lilac bush that had gotten really over grown. The lovely thing about it was that it was growing in such a matter that if I wasnt careful the khuk would run either into a metal fence or hit a nice concrete sidewalk. Well the long and the short of it, I ended up having some chips in the blade (nothing too bad, but bad enough where if I was usin stones itd take a while to gettem out). Well out pops my friends diamond hone. 2 min the nics are gone and the knife is sharp;). Well never being one to leave the job half done I broke out my ceramic hone, and after a few more minutes my arm is hairless :D I like my ceremic hone cuz its set in a way to leave a very discreet edge with a very high polish. I used to use a strop to get a similar edge, but geez why hone through you various compounds when a coupla swipes and your done with a hone.

Federico, I went with a strop because I had most everything needed, want to learn how to use one, and I don't have any hones. But am willing to try them also. Thanks for the idea.

What are some good brands and prices on hones?

While there are much better brands out there here the ones I used. I used em cause they were cheap (under $10) and in stock at the local hardware store. One is a Smith's hone with carbide bits. Its very agressive and took them nics out in a couple of minutes. My other is a Firstone with two diffrent grades of ceramic bits. The white ceramic just gets my knives scary scary sharp, hair beware :D. Of course there better ones, and probably lots of good ones out there. But these are the ones I use.
