I have just bought a highland special and it's AMAZING!! though due to its convex grind I've been reading that the strop is the way to go in sharpening.

i have been looking around at JREindustries and was thinking about getting one of their strop bats. the bats come with 3 compounds balck green and pink.

Now here's my question do i need all 3 or just the black and green (seeing as though barkriver sells the black and green in a kit).

what will i notice when using the 3 of the compounds?

thanks in advance for the tips :)

If you're going to strop a convexed edge you'll be better served by a free-hanging strop.

I'm with Stitchawl on this, the free hanging strop is the way to go, not the strop bat. The strop bat will eventually flatten your edge a bit, but a free hanging strop will follow the existing curvature.

Some say that the phrase "get the hang of it" comes from using the hanging strop, and I cant argue with that. Once you do get the feel for it, it is a great way to keep any decent blade steel sharp. I have used a strop for 99% of my sharpening for the better part of a decade, and it takes off way less metal than any other method I have used.
