I did some searches on stropping, a few on buffing, and this leads me to my question:
What do you prefer, stropping by hand, or buffing on a powered wheel?
Assuming your experienced enough to not heat up your blade on a buffing wheel, what's is the difference between the two methods.
I used to have access to a lot of shop equipment and I used to buff all my edges, They would come out hair poppin' scary sharp now I strop 'em, mostly cause I don't feel like settin' up my buffer, and the edge I get is nearly as sharp(I use a greater angle these days because of the type of work I do) but it takes a little more work.
Now other than speed I can't remember a reason why I preferred one over the other.
They both essentially accomplish the same the same thing, aside from honing an edge down to an infinite point with stones, stropping/buffing is always going to give the edge a slight convex edge.
So given the equipment needed,
Stropping(leather, board, and compound/rouge)
(relatively safe)
Buffing(motor, wheel, compound/rouge, and electric)
(spinning wheel and pointy/sharp object inherently dangerous)
Which do you prefer?
