Strops and compounds

Hi there.

I want to try using a strop for finishing my knives after sharpening.

I have always lusted over that mirror polished edge and want to give it a shot.

Basically, what I have gathered, is that I need to buy a piece of leather, glue it to a chunk of wood, rub some polishing compound on, and strop like YouTube says.

Going to specifics, I get a bit confused.

Wood - Any wood and glue will do? I won't use school glue, I was thinking super glue.

Leather - Any specifics? Smooth or rough side? Type/quality of leather?

Compound - What colour? Where to buy in Canada? I think green is what I'm looking for...will Home Depot carry it?

If anyone has any advice of stropping, I would love to hear that as well.

Ta-ta for now.

Just noticed there is a "Knife Maintenance" forum...can this be moved there?

I realize this is 2 mis-posted threads in 2 days...sorry. I'll get there ;)

Oooh, perfect, thanks buddy! I must have missed that in my search.

Is there a general store to buy quality leather, as well as the polishing compound?

I think HandAmerica has both? They make diamond stropping spray too! Also check ClassicShaving! Hope this is helpful!

my strop recipe:

take an ~8" length of 2"x4" softwood timber.
get a piece of leater 8"x4".
using Araldite or similar glue, apply liberally and glue the leather to the wood.
take the ground up oil and blade gunk from your stones and rub into the leather.
start stropping.

total cost: ~$10.

You can also use balsa wood instead of leather, works fine and i think it is beter for a V edge because it is harder then leather.:D
