Strops

I'm thinking of buying a strop from HandAmerican. Maybe then I can get the hair popping sharpness on my khukuris that you guys seem to easily achieve on yours. Which model would you recommend? I'm trying to decide between the ProCombo 10 or the HandiHone set. Thanks as always.

Kam you can make your own for a whole lot less possibly.
Either one of these would work though.

One reason I prefer to make my own is that you cn make them whatever size you want them and by having at least 3 strops you can keep them all charged with the same abrasive all the time.
I have found that Tripoli, Jewelers Rouge and Chrome Oxide works wonderfully.
And the Chrome Oxide isn't Absolutely needed But if you want an edge beyond belief it will put that edge on any knife you use it on.
I made a couple for a good friend and I used the Chrome Oxide one until I was almost ashamed of myself before I sent it on and therefore I need to make myself another.

I prefer a strop for the khukuris to be narrower than either of these are though.
I like mine about 1" to 1 1/8"" wide at the most. The reason is that this size fits the recurve of the khukuri blade much better than the wider ones.
You can probaly find a place online to get leather belt blanks and all you have to do is glue them to a nice flat piece of white pine or similar with a handle shaped like you want it. I drill a hole in mine so that I can keep them hung up and clean when not in use.
And almost any local machine shop supply house will have some form of the abrasives you need to keep them charged with.
I bought mine in the form of Buffing Rouge Sticks.
One small stick will probably last a lifetime.

An old leather belt from the second hand store works for me. I can stand on the buckle and put on tension with my left hand.

I rarely strop my working khukuris. They live with a rougher edge. I put a fine edge on the display weapons with a strop. Since I rarely go into battle with them, they don't need much repeated stropping either.

Thanks for the help. I have a couple more questions. If I decide to make my own strop, which side should I glue to the wood? In other words, which side do I put the polishing compound on? Also, what are the names of some polishing compounds? And when you strop a khukuri, which do you keep stationary, the strop or the khukuri? Thanks guys.

Glue the rough side down and put the compound on the smooth side.

They are listed in my previous post.

Tripoli, Jewelers Rouge, and Chrome Oxide.

Either or both. And that's one of the advantages of having a solid strop.
A solid strop is also easier to use for other styles of blades.
Find one of the strop sites and read how to use one properly or check out the sraight razor FAQ's here in bladeforums.
There s definitely a trick to using one properly.

You're welcome.

Kam you can go here and check out a lot of info.
The Straight Razor page tells how to properly use a strop and why.

Hope it's the right place anyway.

Thanks Yvsa. I've actually looked at that page already. I was just wondering if there are some other sites that I may have missed.

I think I'm passed the reading stage of my education on strops. At this point I need to actually get one and play with it. There are some things that you just need to do in order to learn.

I gave up on all razors in my mid 20's.

There are better things to do with sharp blades than scrape them across my skin!

How do you clean the strop, or at least
remove the used/dirty grit that accrues on
the leather? How much compound do you put
on the strop(i.e. define 'charged' please)?
