My sister recently got engaged. Her fiance is from Pakistan and he'd like to go hunting with me. In the future. His culture dictates after shooting the animal they must slit the throat and say a prayer. I would like to gift him a knife made from materials native to pakistan. I dont know where to search for something cause all I find are the cheap Pakistan made knives. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Should be able to find a list of native woods to the region and then find on many the online vendors filters to find the right knife.

It's unfair to label EVERY maker from the beautiful country of Pakistan as creating junk. 🔪

YES, there are inexpensive poorly made knives, and YES, the reputation from them has tainted an entire country, some artists who HAVE skills. Shrug.

Maybe eBay isn't the best place to look, although you didn't mention that. I do NOT have a suggestion. But I'd sure like to hear of at least ONE conscientious maker from Pakistan who can make a suitable ( WITH hardened steel) knife.

Any recommendations out there?

Is Nepal close enough? Try Himalayan Imports a Bade Forum vendor. They sell excellent handmade product with the
best customer service - out of Nevada by way of Nepal. Check out the link for their sub forum and lots of options.

deodar cedar tree.
Probably not an ideal wood for knife scales. It's medium grain and somewhat rough to the touch. It's mostly used for cheap furniture, carpentry and outside uses, although it was also used for caskets. It's not a hardwood, which are best. I'd suggest Rosewood or Satinwood. both of which you can probably source in the USA, and have a knife made.

Does your future brother in law affiliate with a specific tribal or ethnic group? If so then you might be able to narrow down on a style of knife. I know there are some indo-persian designs common throughout the middle east that are often associated with tribal groups nearby in Afghanistan like the Choora and pesh kabz (although i wouldn't call those hunting knives). Maybe there is something similar for groups in Pakistan.

If you can find a design that has some tribal or ethnic association then I'm sure Kailash Blades (a BF contributing maker) in Kathmandu can source materials and make a custom order for you.

If I were you, I would just give him a quality knife. Maybe you can find artisans who make handmade knives and order a personalized gift for your sister's fiancé.

I think it would be nice for you to give your sister something to congratulate her on her engagement. I don't know your sister's interests, so you'll come up with many more gift ideas. I might suggest a personalized custom blanket gift for her, too. People usually love these personalized gifts. It makes them feel good that the item was made just for them.
