Hey all,

I thought you might like to see some work by South African maker Stuart Smith. I know he is a member here (posting under the handle SamuraiStu) but he keeps a fairly low profile so many of you may not have heard of him - yet.

This is a hand-forged piece. Materials are 52100, differentially tempered, an African hardwood called tambotie for the handle and mokume damascus for the guard and sub-hilt. Blade is 8,74 inches, 1/4 inch thick. OAL is a bit over 14 inches.

Please excuse my photos, I have no idea why the results vary so widely. Take my word for it that the knife looks so much better in the flesh!

That is Sweet i like it, it looks to be very well made and that handle looks very nice also. Congrats on your score,

That looks very familiar:D
If you are wondering about the Mokume it's from Devin Thomas. I bought it from him in 1998 at the show in Vegas.
Stuart makes nice knives.......enjoy:)

I know this is going to sound dumb as hell, but here goes...

Smell the handle.

Tamboti is the name used in Africa... it's also known as African Sandalwood. It smells positively awesome! I made a knife with it a few months back, and the entire time I was shaping the handle I just wanted to roll around in the dust! It will leave a scent on your hand after you use the knife, too. Too cool!

Great looking knife, btw - sorry to gush so much about the handle material.

Just don't use the wood to cook anything on a open fire. It is absolutely poisonous

But it does smell nice:o
