Alert: this is not a complaint and I will not whine about this fine knife so please don't take this post that way.

This is my son's second stubborn Mule and I'm curious if anyone who has had similar experience has any advice. He uses the heck out of his Kabar Mule and typically gets a very nice edge on it. He uses DMT stones on that just like he does on all his other kinves.

This is the second Mule he's had (wore the first one out - impressive!) that gets to a point where it just doesn't want to get sharp. In addition to the stones, I've tried sandpaper, croc sticks, the Puck, stropping, etc. - everything currently at my disposal.

So 1) has anyone had a similar situation and 2) what the heck did you do about it? I'm not planning to break down and buy a belt sander or buffer to sharpen this one knife but short of that - any advice?

It's time to convex that mule. Hell, send it to me and I'll do it for you.

Assuming you haven't already, but have you considered getting him a different knife? Don't know about the Mules but the Dozier Kabars I can personally vouch for(you can find em for half the price if you look hard enough). They also make em in a "mini" size depending on how old the gentleman is. TDI folders are all kinds of great too if you're digging serrations. Also, if you are thinking about getting him a fixed blade i might know a few people to recommend some very good knifes with a black coating. ;)

We are thinking about convexing it - thanks, tradewater. Might take you up on that - we'll see. :D

whereismyclock - I've got a kabar dozier too and love it. My son is old enough to buy is own danged knives :p and really likes the Mule. I wouldn't want to carry one quite that big (unless they ever do the folding BK2) but he loves it and the handle is very comfortable.

They need to do the folding BK2. Heck, Cold Steel could do it....and I'm no big CS fan. But the fact of the matter is, that Rajah 2 I had was a BIG friggin knife with a tough as nails lock. SO if THEY could do something like that, Fo Sho' BK&T/Kabar should be able to pull something off.
