I keep getting these Statblaster objects like X2oc, C8hf and Vje showing up in the temp folder when I run Adaware. No matter how often I get rid of them they always come back. Some anti-spyware sites say just go into add/remove programs and remove Statblaster. Well, it ain't in there.

Then there are some that say you should go into the registry and find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run" and delete the value "update stats". Well, it ain't in there either. My view settings is "show all files", so I guess they're not hidden.

The Ad-Aware details reference software\wildmedia, and I do have a registry key for that. Should I just delete it or what? I've already backed up the registry.

I'm running Spywareblaster and Spybot in addition to the Ad-Aware, I don't know how this #@$& thing got in but I want it dead!

Try Spybot Search & Destroy if you havent already...both of them have definitions that the other one does not

If its really driving you nuts, sometimes the best way is to use the Riggs method.

"I saw we dust off and nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure."

translation: back up your data, reformat and install from scratch.

Thats my least favorite part about Windows; you can't really fix it once it gets past a certain point. Kind of like if your car's hood was welded shut.

I deal with this junk all day long, and everybody asks me everyday how to remedy these problems. The answer is pretty simple. Get Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, and use an account with "User" status. Only use the administrator account to install known good programs. Keep up with Windows updates and make sure that your antivirus is up to date. If you have a broadband connection, make sure that you use a hardware firewall.

This will cure 99% of the problems people run into. The reason for almost all of these adware/spyware/malware problems is lack of security on the users part.

Thanks for the info everyone. I have 3 anti-spyware programs that I run pretty regularly plus McAffee anti-virus. I'm pretty careful but I have a wife and 17 year old daughter who download everything they see.

Mr.BadExample: I did find a wildtangent item in my add/remove programs list, it said there were "problems" with the uninstall and that it may have already been uninstalled. Maybe some fragment of it was left behind and is causing the troubles. Time will tell, I guess. Thanks again.

'twas Hicks, not Riggs. One of my all time fav movies :D

Do a websearch for "CWshredder" and "hijack this" . The first will kill off cool web search which is one of the hardest spyware programs of all time to kill. The second will lwt you terminate (and possibly delete) any process that is running on your system.

Both are free.

Well, I just ran Adaware again, and no sign of the Statblaster stuff. Thanks again everybody.

BTW Danelle, I just downloaded Firefox - thanks for the heads-up.
